DuMont Reisen and SUDITALIEN: Southern Italy, told to a German audience

SUDITALIEN is not just a typical travel handbook. It offers a rich, modern portrait of Southern Italy — its traditions, landscapes, culture and way of life.

Published by DuMont Reisen a long-established German publisher, the guide is widely available in bookstores and online shops across Germany. It is set to become a go-to reference for anyone looking for an up-to-date guide to Southern Italy, with a special focus on:

  • Puglia

  • Basilicata

  • Calabria

  • Campania

“A Pugliese Around the World” is mentioned in SUDITALIEN as a press/blogger source.

Among the trusted sources quoted in SUDITALIEN, DuMont Reisen has also chosen to include “A Pugliese Around the World” di Manuela Lenoci, ilisting it as a recommended press/blogger reference.

IThe guide specifically mentions the column A Portata di Manu”, focused on Puglia, an editorial space that tells the story of the region in an accessible, authentic and contemporary way, blending storytelling, local identity and an international outlook.

It is a recognition that shows how a strong narrative of Puglia and Southern Italy — when built with expertise, passion and a touch of irony — can become a reference point for international travel publishing.

German women journalists, Southern Italy — and a story born on a train

SUDITALIEN is written by two German journalists who are deeply in love with Southern Italy: Nicoletta De Rossi and Jacqueline Christoph. For years, they have travelled across the South, telling its story with respect, curiosity and real knowledge.

One of them is Nicoletta. And this is where the guide connects with a personal story that feels like destiny.

Sixteen years ago, on a train journey, our lives — hers and mine — crossed. We were sitting face to face as she was travelling through Puglia for the first time. Two different paths, two different energies, and yet from that moment on we never truly lost touch.

Because some connections don’t need explanations: they hold up through time, distance and change..

Nicoletta, Venice — and a name that came from Bari

There’s one detail that feels as if it was written специально for this story.

Nicoletta De Rossi was born in Venice — yet her name already carries the South.

The doctor who delivered her in Venice was called Nicola, and he originally came from Bari.

Back then there were no ultrasound scans, only a promise her mother made to life:

  • If it’s a boy, we’ll call him Nicola.”

  • “If it’s a girl, Nicoletta.”

It was a girl. And, it seems, Southern Italy had already chosen her.

A professional journalist, Nicoletta studied Foreign Languages and Literatures at Ca’ Foscari University in her hometown, then moved to Milan, where she lived for fifteen years. She has been writing for years about tourism and design for Italian and German media, and she has authored several German-language travel guides about Italy.

She has won the ENIT award — which honours those who tell Italy’s story in Germany in the German language — three times: in 2013 for the best travel guide (Merian live! Apulien), in 2015 for the best Italy Special, and in 2017 for the best Italy-focused online newspaper, www.sonoitalia.de, which she directs..

A Pugliese Around the World: telling Puglia’s story to the world

Being mentioned in SUDITALIEN — a leading German travel guide published by DuMont Reisen — is not a trophy to show off. It is a quiet confirmation of a consistent journey.

A Pugliese Around the World, written by Manuela Lenoci, was created to tell the story of Puglia and Southern Italy to the world, with a voice that is modern, accessible, ironic, and deeply rooted in local identity.

That is exactly what the column “A Portata di Manu” is about: Puglia told without stereotypes, without fake postcard images, with the smile of someone who truly knows her land — and still keeps discovering it.

Because real success in travel storytelling is not about being seen. It’s about being recognised for the quality of your work.

And when Southern Italy is told well, it travels far. All the way to Germany.
