Gate staff can earn up to €2.50 for each non-compliant bag they detect. Ryanair's incentives to enforce limits and increase the fees charged to passengers for checking larger bags will begin in November.
Ryanair is changing its carry-on baggage policy: starting next November, staff will receive a higher incentive, increasing from €1.50 to €2.50 for each non-compliant bag stopped at the gate. The monthly baggage limit of €80 will also be eliminated.
Anyone attempting to check in oversized baggage without paying a supplement risks paying an extra fee of up to 75 euros to send it to the hold.
Chief Executive Michael O'Leary defended the company's move, saying strict enforcement of the rules was necessary to maintain punctual flights and low fares .
What's new with baggage allowances for Ryanair passengers?
Ryanair's policy allows you to bring a small backpack (40 x 30 x 20 cm) free of charge, which can be placed under your seat. A carry-on bag requires an additional fee.
Every year, approximately 200,000 passengers , or 0.1 percent of Ryanair's total, are stopped for oversized baggage. "I'm still amazed by those who think they can slip through without us noticing," O'Leary said, reiterating that those who don't follow the rules will not be allowed to board.
